Utility coordination

Service disconnections & abolishment

A house cannot come down over live services. Electricity requires formal supply abolishment: permanent removal of the connection by the network, arranged through the retailer, distinct from a simple disconnection. Gas needs the meter removed and the service made safe; water and sewer are cut and capped to authority standards; telecom leads are terminated. Each utility runs on its own clock, and demolition programs are hostage to the slowest one unless applications go in early.

Scope

What this covers

  • Electricity supply abolishment applications and evidence trail for the demolition file

  • Gas meter removal and service termination through the network operator

  • Water disconnection and sewer capping in line with Sydney Water requirements

  • Telecommunications lead-in terminations

  • Confirmation documentation compiled before any machine starts

Timing

When it's needed

Ahead of every full demolition, and ahead of partial works where services route through the sections being removed. Lead times vary by utility and season; abolishment in particular can take weeks, making it the first application lodged once demolition is decided.

Never enter a demolition site, cross exclusion fencing or disturb stockpiled material, partially demolished structures are unstable and dust may contain hazardous fibres. If you suspect disturbed asbestos or see unsafe work practices, keep clear and report it to SafeWork NSW.
